Should Faith be Blind?
|
In our worldly
experience faith is
almost never blind. I have faith in my spouse, but when I first met him
I didn't.
I had no reason to
have faith in him. , but gradually I got to know him more and more,
every time he kept his word to me my faith in him grew. Every time he
showed me that I was special to him my faith in him grew more and more.
By the time we got married I had allot of faith in him, and over the
last 15 years my faith in him has grown even more. Could I be
wrong in my trust in him? Well yes the divorce rate in this country
proves that not everyone gets it right, and I am not perfect therefore
I could be wrong. But every time my husband shows me evidence of his
love the probability of me being right increases
. You see my faith
in him is built on evidence.
If I
however got married the first day I met him most
people would think I was stupid. But that is what most people seem to
be doing when they choose a world view, they pick the first one that
looks good to them, or the one that their parents have without ever
thinking that maybe just maybe they could be wrong about the
faith they have chosen. Just as many people really mess up when they
get married the day they met , some of the people who have joined
with a world view have really messed up. There are at least 600
different so called "gods" in the world today if you add in all the
ways the different deities have been distorted there are thousands of
possibilities. Some of them have to be wrong.
We have allot riding
on our choice when we choose a world view, most
world views ask for some kind of service,
some kinds of
service are easy, like feeding the dead on day a year,
some are difficult like drinking deadly kool-aid.
And many of them
have some kind of statement about what happens to you
when you die.
Since it is your
eternal soul at stake it is important that you find
at least some basis for your faith to make sure you have the right one.
My
definition of faith is different
then the one most people have in mind when they are talking about
religion. Mine comes from
the Bible.
Hebrews 11: 1 Now faith is the substance of
things hoped for, the EVIDENCE of things not seen.
This definition more closely matches what most of us mean when we
are talking about faith in worldly things and people.
We have faith that
our spouses will not cheat, faith that we will survive our next trip to
the grocery store, and faith that when we approach someone in police
clothes, that the person is actually a police officer, and a good
person.
In my faith
(Christianity) we are commanded to have sighted faith.
According to
1 Peter 3:15
we are to give a reason (evidence) for the hope that we have in
Christ.
Philippians
1:7 We are to defend and confirm the Gospel;
Jude 1:3 tells
us to contend for the faith
Romans 1:20 tells us
that God can be at least partially understood by looking at the things
that were made by him.
If the Bible tells
us that there is a way to learn more about God by looking at the things
he made, and those evidences are so strong that no one has an excuse
not to believe in him, we should learn those evidences and share them.
We can't do these things unless we have sighted faith. Please
don't misunderstand me I am not saying that evidence can save anyone,
Just the same way that knowing that marriage exist doesn't make one
married, we still have to fall in love and commit to a person before we
can consider ourselves married. After we know God exist then the Holy
Spirit can come into our hearts to bind us with Christ it is then
, and only then we can consider ourselves saved. Apologetics
takes us only half way.
