I hate to admit it when I
am wrong but I do it all the time.
And once again I have to admit that I was wrong. Absolutely wrong.
You see until a couple of weeks ago I thought talking about relativism
was strictly a mental exercise, I did not believe that people
actually existed that believed that things were true only if they
perceived them to be true.
In some circumstances
truth can be relative:
If I were to burp at an American table I would be considered rude.
If I were to burp at the table is some countries I would be
complimenting the Chef.
In that case something can be true for you but not for me.
That kind of truth is based on the culture so in one sense truth can be
relative.
But even in this case an absolute applies. We should be kind to the
people we dine with. .
The reason that I didn't
believe relativism was more then a mental exercise is
that some truths had to be accepted as absolutes in order to
survive.
exp.: Gravity makes solid objects fall if nothing is holding them
up.
exp.: Cars can run you over even if you don't know they are there.
But now I have met some
people who won't even admit the laws of gravity are absolute.
So I have decided to do a study on the nature of truth.
First it is always important to define your terms
Truth: in accordance with fact or reality
Some people measure truth by what is commonly accepted as true, but
this can be a grave mistake.
A
long time ago people thought tomatoes were poisonous, which we know now
is untrue. But how many people staved to death with a tomato plant
within reach before this fact was discovered?
Bad "facts" can kill.
How do we decide what is true?
