Verses About
Faith
|
I
believe that the word faith is extremely misused, especailly when we
are talking about religion. When we have faith in a spouse, or
family member it usually isn't because we want them to be good people,
it is because we know the person in question, and we have good reason
to believe they will not do us wrong. Sometimes we can be wrong but the
important thing is we are not just picking a person out of a crowd and
saying they will be good. When we get on an airplane we have
faith that the airplane will get us where we want to go in one piece,
while we might be wrong we have good resaon to believe we are right.
But somehow when we talk about relgion the definition of faith seems to
get changed. When most people talk about religous faith they seem
to be talking about picking a story out of the air and saying ok I'll
believe in that no matter what the facts may say. In fact I have seen I
don't know how many people on the net saying that it is impossible to
prove faith, you just have to believe.
I don't think this is what the God of the Bible was talking about when
he said we needed faith.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the
substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen
|
According to Hebrews 11:1 there is evidence for faith. No one has seen
air but no one would doubt that air exist, we see dust floating around
in the sunbeams that enter our house. We hear things banging against
our house on windy days and know it is the air that is responsible.
Just try not breathing for a minute and you know something important is
missing from your body. We may not be able to see it but we have
absolute faith that it exist because we have discovered that we can't
live without it. There is evidence that God is real, even though we
can't see him.

Romans 10
1Brethren,
my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be
saved. 2For I bear them
record that they have
a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3For they being ignorant of God's
righteousness, and going about to
establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto
the righteousness of God.
|
Paul recognized that the Jews had a zeal for God, but that zeal wasn't
according to knowledge, since they were ignorant of the knowledge of
God they still needed to be saved. This implies that our faith must be
somewhat based on knowledge as well, but blind faith does not depend on
knowledge, so if we have blind faith we are probably lacking in
knowledge.
