A yoke is a
tool that was used to attach to animals together to force them to
travel in the same direction at the same pace. If two oxen of roughly
the same size
and strength were yoked together they did a pretty good job at plowing
a
field. But if the two oxen were of different
strengths or sizes the rows would be uneven. and less could get
planted, and less food would be available to feed the family.
In human relationships we can stand some differences
we can have different likes and dislikes but if we are to have a
strong relationship one that will enable us to plow a straight line
through the field of life we must have a common world view.
In my own personal
experience I did not become a serious Christian till after I got
married to an atheist.
As much as I love him it causes some serious problems in our
relationship. In any marriage you have to give your parent just as
much, if not more then you take. This becomes difficult if your partner
has a completely different set of values then you do. Spouses tend to
get upset if you abandon them every Sunday, demand that he not watch
his favorite shows on tv.....
On the other hand it is not fair for the other spouse to endure
things that are completely against what their spouse believes. And
those problems become even more complicated when the children arrive.
Which parent do you think a child will prefer the parent that forces
them to dress up every Sunday and sit still for over an hour every
Sunday,
or the parent who wants them to play in the park when it is cool and
the
rides are not crowded? The parent that lets them almost
everything
on tv or the parent that is picky about the tv they watch?
If you have not yet married PLEASE do yourself a big favor and do not
get overly attached to someone whose world view is contrary to your
own. You can NOT count on changing them. Wait till after they change
before you bond with them.
